This is supposedly to avoid wrongful detention... but why now all of a sudden? The timing is... strange.

These tend to come days/weeks before an escalation, as travel options will become even more limited.

There are reports that Russia is preparing for an offensive in the Ukraine... but why would that threaten US citizens traveling in Russia?

I don't understand the connection between the two.

The idea is that Russia views the US as its enemy and is thus likely to seek reprisals against US citizens in Russia or to use them as political fodder
