The orphan trains. The grand hotels of Canada. The Erie Canal. The instant massive build up of San Francisco as evidenced by 1860's photography. The "settlement" of Australia. The list goes on and on.
The early construction in Australia and New Zealand is the clincher. There's no way a tiny population of immigrants to a new land completely different to where they originated were able to build such colossal constructions whilst at the same time trying to survive in a harsh landscape...
