Maybe your talking about Gore Vidal? He wrote books in the 60’s with homosexual and transgender characters. More like promoting those lifestyles.

He also debated William F. Buckley during the 1968 Democrat Convention. Sorry for the PBS link, but this exchange is good. First heard the audio of it on Rush Limbaugh’s show.
