I lived in New Mexico for much of my life, and hunted a lot of the state. I've never seen one in my life. A lot of the state lands I hunted have cattle on them, but they belong to ranchers that have the grazing leases on the land. I never hunted the Gila Wilderness so maybe they do have some there, but I don't see the need to kill them and leave the meat laying to rot.
Their is wild cattle in rough country out west,been their for hundreds of years.

I've heard of them in south Texas, but I agree,no point in shooting them.
