With Fetterman sidelined Dems have 47 votes available to them plus Bernie = 48. This makes Sinema (AZ) and Manchin (WV) key votes in all actions. Dems need RINO support for anything and new total is 99 Senators, making VP Kamala “tiebreaker” irrelevant
It is better to have a Dem Senator in hospital than replaced, imo.
118th Congress (2023–2025) Majority Party: Democrats (48 seats) Minority Party: Republicans (49 seats) Other Parties: 3 Independents Total Seats: 100
Technically, it looks like Republicans are actually majority party in Senate right now if Mitch had any balls to push the issue and enforce Senate rules. Bernie caucuses with Dems, but Sinema and Manchin appear not to.
There is no reason to hide this. If hes brain dead then Shapiro simply picks his replacement until the next Statewide general election in November 2024. At that time there is a special election to choose the interims replacement for the last 2 years of Fettermans term.
Im thinking this is fake news. But I cant figure out who it benefits.
It may turn out that keeping him in the hospital has some as yet undiscovered benefit per Senate rules. Remember when one of the NM Senators was in the hospital (last year?) and they were moving forward with votes without him that seemed to cause some delays or consternation for the Biden agenda. That's what I was thinking of.
