The movie They Live illustrated exactly this, and did it very well. About how so many saw their chance to have a little taste of the good life and grabbed it, caring nothing about what that meant for anyone else - or even for themselves in the short term.

Also see the old Twilight Zone episode called "To Serve Man." Same thing.
