I decided to look into Celebrity deaths and whether they had spiked over the last few years (Covid/Executions/who knows) and I found something really odd.
I'm sure some of this can be explained as a growing number of people considered 'celebrities' etc. as per this article:
https://www.thesun.co.uk/living/1693402/theres-a-reason-there-have-been-so-many-celebrity-deaths-this-year-and-theres-more-to-come/
Then there's this one that debunks any increase in deaths in 2016:
https://edition.cnn.com/2016/12/30/entertainment/worst-year-celebrity-deaths-trnd/index.html
But when I look at the data it shows a remarkably steady increase over time.
The source data was from https://www.imdb.com/search/name/?death_date=<yyyy>
There were a couple of odd ones too. 1969 and 1968 both recorded the same figure - 1483 deaths.
1954 and 1955 also recorded the same deaths - 849
That seems just too weird. I can't really get my head around it and was hoping someone could come along and just see what I'm missing and tell me :)
PS If anyone wants the raw data let me know and I'll paste a csv of the info
Well it would lineup with the “Celebrity” industries Music, Hollywood etc. steadily increasing in scale and scope. As well as substance abuse becoming a rather entrenched and typical part of such industries.
Though it’d be helpful to get a definition on what precisely the data is considering a “Celebrity”. As that could quite easily encompass a wide range of people who’d technically fit the criteria. Even though the wider public could have absolutely no idea who they are and why they’re considered a celebrity.
Yeah, I haven't sanitised the data yet, but it was odd enough that I felt like posting it to see if anyone else could see what was going on.
