I'm not from the US, but here's my take: I'm all for merit based immigration as a possibility. In my field there's a lot of work but not a lot who can do it. I'm the only "native" in my company currently that does the job, the rest is imported. For every 100 people that retire a year, about 20 new ones come in the work force. Yet, the sales part is growing still so more demand on fewer hands. I'm glad the rest of the team is imported, I just can't find anyone else who does the job.
On the other hand, our country is flooded by people who's sole purpose is to make the bureaucracy work. They get free housing, free money, free food and a lot of paper shufflers earn a salary by providing it to them. I say fuck that.
I know for a fact the same shortage in skilled persons in my field is happening in the US, I know I can get a job in a heartbeat in any state. But the bureaucracy wouldn't let me.
TLDR: Merit yes, border jumpers no.
Yes, but that speaks to deficiencies in education. If you ban the immigration, it's not like a large country can't meet its needs through training. South Africa, for example, developed a top-notch arms industry when faced with embargos by becoming self reliant, rather than wilting by the lack of foreign support.
If you don't mind sharing, what field do you work in?
I solve 400 piece puzzles in about an inch cubed ;-)
Intriguing. Sounds like chemistry. But could be chip wafer building, or a lot of things... it's good to be good at what you do.
I meant squared.. sorry. Watchmaker, I usually do the higher end mechanical chronographs
