Not particularly unsurprising. Left-Wing Liberation Theology and Left-Wing thinking has by and large found a solid home in Senior Western European Catholic Clergy. Especially in and around Germany.
Which coincides with the general leftward shift of the Western portion of the continent in general. The Conservative/Traditional wing losing its hold on the Papacy only drove further nails into the proverbial coffin as Traditionalist/Conservative Priests and Clergy were sidelined or forced into retirement.
A lot of long neglected problems are coming home to roost for the Catholic Church. Doubtful it will result in its end. The Catholic Church and Catholicism in general has in the past proven remarkably resilient to weathering massive shifts and events one would think would destroy them.
They will likely be on unsteady ground for probably a couple decades as they sort out their internal problems and grapple with what will undoubtedly be many probably necessary changes. But I don’t foresee the church collapsing.
Depending on how the Popes after Francis handle the situation. They could emerge stronger then ever.
