My concern is that there will be some minor technicality that somehow precludes him from being elected. We already saw how he can stand for election, get the most votes of anyone and not be voted in.

Can't run for election while being investigated, perhaps? Is that possible? Can't run if there is an ongoing court case?

I am not a lawyer but I bet there is something. Teams of prosecutors have been trying to find a loophole like tthat since 2015. They may have found something.
