It used to be the celebration of the New Year. The old calendar's had April 1 as the first day of the new year and the assholes changed it to December 31st and then used April fools as a day to ridicule those who still celebrate it on April 1st (sound familiar?). Also, apparently the original calendar is supposed to 13 months with 28 days (and a leap year somewhere in there).
It's been a while since I fell down that rabbit hole but that's what I recall.
