If X refers to the X axis, then on a graph it would refer to the columns? The 22nd letter of the alphabet is "V", which is 5 in Roman Numerals.

I didn't say anything about a book. I am talking about a situation that was postulated in a book. But, can be referred to independently of the book because it's an idea in and of itself.
