My brother was stationed at the Coast Guard Station in Elizabeth City, NC for about 10 years starting around 2002 or 2003. The wife and I took the kids to Colonial Williamsburg several times when we went down to visit. This re-enactment was always a highlight for me. The 'Liberty or Death' speech is one of the great American oratories and my personal favorite along with 'American Crises'.
Our yearly trip was scheduled for Easter Break (my slow season, the kids only missed a week of school) and we would take two weeks. Being a Civil War buff and amateur researcher, one of our trips was always to a battlefield. We also did Washington a couple times, Kitty Hawk, Mt Vernon and Monticello and of course Kings Dominion Amusement Park (have to keep the kids engaged). Good memories of those days. I tried to raise Patriots.
The re-enactment I posted is in St. John's Church on Church Hill in Richmond, where the speech was originally given. If you're ever there, it's definitely worth a visit. The Tiffany stained glass windows are wonderful. Then head downhill and you can visit the state Capitol building Jefferson designed.
Several years ago we did something I've always wanted to do - visit Williamsburg at Christmas time. I've been there many times but that was special.
I grew up in a town famous for its Civil War battles. Now I live in an area that was surveyed by a young George Washington.
Well the kids are grown and gone now and my brother is retired and back in Michigan. Perhaps if Patriots win this war the wife and I will take the grandkids down and make a trip to the Church. I would like to see it and the re-enactment there.
We have done Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI at Christmastime. The village is a mish mash of early time periods but has an overall colonial feel. It was a cold but fun day.
Here's a re-enactment of the speech at St. John's, which is a beautiful church with stunning stained glass windows.
