There’s debate that she actually said “bread.” Who knows?! Anyway, he’s disgusting while I feel she was a naive innocent.
I heard that "bread" referred to the heavy, coarse bread the peasants usually ate and "cake" referred to a lighter, more refined bread, not a confection.
She meant 'cake' as in the spillover dough and crap that cooked or 'caked' onto the stoves of the commoners. She meant let them eat crap. That is a better translation.
I’m still not so sure…I have a family member who is a Marie Antoinette fanatic. I will consult with her. I just don’t think she was guilty like her handlers were. But, who knows — I could be totally wrong.
My understanding is that she never said anything of the sort, and it was entirely fabricated by the press. They hated her, of course, for being young and naive, (nowadays they’d probably attack her as being “privileged” and “entitled”) and they loved stirring up anti-monarchist anger.
Love your post, and totally agree! I will share with my Marie Antoinette fanatic relative!
This is very plausible.
Scrolled down just to comment that exact thing lol
I agree. I've read that theory about that too. I guess it's not the message, but how the message is delivered.
Damn media! Horrid even back then!
Nobody will ever know because it all sounds french.
