The Lincoln cent was minted beginning in 1909 to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Lincoln's birth - hardly an attempt demean.
Prior to Lincoln issues the US minted the Indian Head cent from 1959-1909.
Concurrently with minting Indian Head pennies for a time the US also minted Indian Head GOLD $2-1/2 quarter Eagles (1908-1929), $5 1/2 Eagles (1908-1916), and $10 Eagles (1907-1933).
Indians were featured on the lowest and higher denominations. I don't think the US Mint ever intended to demean Indians during the time they were featured on pennies any more than was Lincoln.
Instead of seeing the wheat stalks featured on the reverse of pre-1959 Lincolns as some sort of cabalist symbology think of "amber waves of grain." It is likely to be a more accurate interpretation.
Fair enough.
