A wide-angle lens works in the vertical direction as well as the horizontal. And it does change the shape (fish-eye effect), which is due to perspective. Stand 1 foot away from your car and view it in one look. Weird shape. The farther features are from the centerline, the smaller they appear. A telephoto lens will minimize this effect.
