You are 100% right, but many people are scared to lose thier jobs because they don't enough skills to get another one.
They get stagnant in thier jobs and stop learning new things. When tossed in the market they quickly learn thier prior experience is useless to other companies. They key to job seeking success is always prepare for a job lost even when your current job is stable.
I for one always keep up with latest tech in my primary field of IT and practice my secondary skill of automotive repair (in case SHTF).

My exact sentiments. I told a friend who did it because the bus drivers union cut some deal, what the hell is wrong with you?

The kicker, the bus drivers and mechanics were the only ones forced. Management not held to same standards.
