The PR impact for dems will not just be bad. It will be apocalyptic. Their support will completely collapse once people realized that they not only arrested an ex-president on bogus charges, they violated his rights in the process.

That trial will go on into his Presidency. They will use it for impeachment #3,4,5...100.

That requires the House to flip back, in which case he gets less done. That isn't good from a planning perspective.
