It is still a very commonly seen thing....the Amish, unfortunately, are big on chopping the tails to make a very short one. And many of them work these beautiful creatures to death, go by buggy to the auctions that ship to the out-of-country slaughter houses, and dump those horses for others. It really is disgusting. Lot of drafts are cruelly discarded at these places.
I used to live near Amish country and I've heard those stories, too. An unwanted horse either goes for slaughter or he goes to the Amish, and one was about as bad as the other.
Draft horses work unseen on the farms. Old Standardbred racehorses (the racing sulky horses) and old Saddlebred show horses often end up pulling buggies for the Amish until they drop. Sad but true.
