Pretty random. I mean, if they take human blood & test it outside of the body, why don't they take animal blood as well & see what happens? Dogs & cats didn't get the shot but they are close to their masters. Deer (& wolves & etc) are not close to people but I'm sure some hunter would be happy to give a little blood of his recent catch for the cause
