I know it's way off-topic, but I've been listening to this song off and on for days, not really sure why, but it really is a timeless classic in the truest sense. love to hear people's thoughts, feelings, (ideally) personal interpretations, memory associations, etc.

supposedly, mclean sold a book about what the song meant in 2016 (funny timing, just saying), but it's always interesting to me to hear what such a beautiful piece of art means to other people. =)
Before I read the lyrics I just always thought the song was nostalgic for simpler times. Seeing the lyrics made the song seem more like there is a sense of mourning for the loss of American innocence.
I'd say the innocence of a generation or maybe of rock music more likely...
America lost her innocence long before that...
