We see something like this very often in societies. I believe it is because the police force traditionally are there to protect the state, while the military are sworn in to protect the country.
There is a reason we call it a "police state" and not a "military state". The military usually only makes a coup, when the state has become too powerful.
All I'm saying is, that it is traditionally the police that takes side with (or rather, takes order from) the state. Not saying it is an absolute.
Good point, but it has been known to happen. I've never heard of the police stepping in like that.
