I work in social services and I can guarantee you this is way more common than you imagine. It gets worse though. There are numerous people who this girl will meet who are supposed to be the good guys. The people in the medical facilities. The police. The social services. The foster homes.

I have dealt with numerous people, male and female, who have said that the discovery of the original crimes is just the top of the roller coaster. Then it picks up speed and gets worse.

Once a child has been damaged enough they will never trust an adult again so adults who have control and power over them sometimes take advantage with the premise that the damage has already been done and... who will believe them anyway?

Most of these children grow up dysfunctional, homeless, insane... but there are a few who come off as absolutely normal and oftentimes they learn how to act and how to fit perfectly in society and if you met them you would never imagine what they went through in the past.

Too many of the functional ones are dedicated to forgetting and just moving on with their lives but there are a few who think of nothing but revenge. Sometimes they get it but it never makes the news for some reason.
