And the logical followups:

What on earth do they value more than that $7xx million dollars (plus reputational damage)?

What are they more afraid of than losing that $7xx million dollars?

I suspect there was some very interesting and highly illegal activity being discussed within both these firms and neither of them truly wanted to go anywhere near discovery.
