This has been the plan for a while, ever since the Pentagon started its Lifelog project that was to find out everything about everybody. That project was stopped the day Facebook went live. Coincidence?
Ever since "The Cloud" became a thing we have seen a grab for our data. Why would people provide central storage, sometimes for free? What was in it for them? Well, all thses central storage areas like social media, cloud storage, email systems etc collect all our data. They claim it is secure but, I suspect, only from us.
Imagine what a useful resource social media selfies would be if you were developing a facial recognition system, for instance. Almost every image will have a person in there whose identity is known. Their friends will be known as well. You could not afford to buy that amount of data.
We can now have huge amounts of assistance in our computer coding programs and that has been incorporated into AI. Imagine how useful a central storage system like GitHub would have been in that process.
Now add in all those apps you can only get access to if you sign up and log in. Why don't they just let you download the program? It's because you are the product. They want to find out about you - and probably not for your benefit.
