Welcome to General Chat - GAW Community Area
This General Chat area started off as a place for people to talk about things that are off topic, however it has quickly evolved into a community and has become an integral part of the GAW experience for many of us.
Based on its evolving needs and plenty of user feedback, we are trying to bring some order and institute some rules. Please make sure you read these rules and participate in the spirit of this community.
Rules for General Chat
-
Be respectful to each other. This is of utmost importance, and comments may be removed if deemed not respectful.
-
Avoid long drawn out arguments. This should be a place to relax, not to waste your time needlessly.
-
Personal anecdotes, puzzles, cute pics/clips - everything welcome
-
Please do not spam at the top level. If you have a lot to post each day, try and post them all together in one top level comment
-
Try keep things light. If you are bringing in deep stuff, try not to go overboard.
-
Things that are clearly on-topic for this board should be posted as a separate post and not here (except if you are new and still getting the feel of this place)
-
If you find people violating these rules, deport them rather than start a argument here.
-
Feel free to give feedback as these rules are expected to keep evoloving
In short, imagine this thread to be a local community hall where we all gather and chat daily. Please be respectful to others in the same way
For those of us who love doggos, and appreciate our service members, current and past… and have Instagram (I have it for showing off my veggies and following other homesteaders) - I want to introduce you to two accounts:
@dixietheprayingdog @frozentrident
Dixie is a military support dog, and Jeff Read, a former Navy Seal who owns Frozen Trident kennel is an up and coming Alaskan musher. He has a very interesting story about rescuing a doggo from Iraq - “Frank the Tank”.
Give them some love, and heal your heart while watching their videos :-)
I lost my 150lb full German Rotweiler to a brain tumor, he was my best friend for over nine years and I raised him from a two month old fluffball. The kid went everywhere with me, bite of everything I eat, dog park, camping trips, jobsites... the whole 9 yards. I'm tearing up just reflecting. I've always been a bit of a dog snob, male purebred, 2 months old yade yadi...
The scamdemic hits and I'm lonely missing my best friend of 9 years so I start looking around and find somewhere selling purebred rotties. They tell me it's a $700 deposit but I can't meet the puppy of my choice because of covid... I'm not dropping $1,400 on a puppy that I haven't met and don't know where he is. Totally a scam in speculation.
My family used to rescue Rottweilers growing up so I decided that maybe a rescue is a better route... love the breed.
I end up on a Rottie rescue page somehow and find out someone surrendered a half Rottweiler half German Shepard mutt. Chained to a tree the first 9 months of his life then was so unsocialized he didn't get adopted from from his shelter because of it... these ladies at a different shelter grab him a day before they're gonna euthanize him. Sat there a month before I found their ad. We talk and they agree that I'm about the only person they've met capable of handling this 100lb mutt.
I was hesitant but end up wrestling him into my truck like a feral coyote and took him home. He'd never been indoors, never had toys, treats... nothing. He has never chewed or messed in my house. I've never met a dog so loyal, obedient and intelligent. He just turned 2 and he's the best dog I could have asked for. I don't think I'll ever buy a purebred again.

I don't know who saved who... I wonder how many of those poor dogs Biden left to die in kennels in Afghanistan would have been a loyal companion like this kid.
Beautiful experience and story. Thank you for sharing
