It seems like ((they)) found out that assassinations like JFK and MLK just turns the victims into icons. Character assassinations works much better.

I don't think they are trying to off Trump anymore, at least not right now. They are going after his character to prevent him from ever gaining power again. Should he gain public power again, then they might get desperate...
