They didn’t need it. The hull was already weakened since it was swapped at the shipyard with its sister ship, The Olympia. Check the blueprints. They were swapped after the Olympia was broadsided by a Royal Naval ship in which White Star (owners of both) were found liable. The keel bent, it should’ve been scrapped or kept from trans-Atlantic voyages.

The Astors were one of a handful of American oligarchs with means to oppose the 3rd & Final installment of the FED.
