Because he wasn't a bitch who felt like he needed sympathy from everyone.

Norm tried to make people laugh and feel good, and those types of people don't drag everyone else down with their personal problems.

Unlike now where every celebrity and politician is seeking sympathy points from people for things as benign as a fucking cold.
