I have not made any serious inquiries but my thinking is that Chansley was appropriated by the bad guys. He was dressed up to make for good, memorable, photo ops and then he was wheeled from photo to photo by the Capitol police. He was meant to show what crackpots all those deplorables were.

I don't think Chansley knew exactly what he was doing but now it looks as if he might have acquired a better lawyer.
