“You don’t know what you have to hide. Governments come and go and things that weren’t illegal become illegal. And suddenly, you could end up being somebody who could be retroactively arrested and prosecuted for something that wasn’t illegal when you did it.”

Any central repository of data is open to thhis kind of exploitation. One clue is whether something is offered "free of charge." because that means you are the product!
This applies to social media, centralised email systems like GMail and any form of cloud storage. Systems for "your convenience" like a way to have all your data, emails, contacts etc available on all your platforms (mobile, PC, laptop, tablet, wortk/home etc) are all ways to collect your data.
Social media selfies must have been a godsend to people developing facial recognition systems. Billions of full face images, all with names of at least one member attached, various lighting conditions and backgrounds. it would have cost a fortune mfor a team of photographers to acquire that data but social media users gave it all away for nothing.
