Pinkerton is a private security guard and detective agency established around 1850 in the United States by Scottish-born American cooper Allan Pinkerton and Chicago attorney Edward Rucker as the North-Western Police Agency, which later became Pinkerton & Co, and finally the Pinkerton National Detective Agency.
Did a search and found this recent post. In context of the above, pinkertons sound like a term for a corporate hired-goon shake-down sort of group of thugs that menace people for some perceived company wrongthink. With the the concept named after an actual company that still is in this line of intimidation and extortion.
Formerly a detective and security agency. Known mostly for their union busting activities post civil war. Depending on who you ask, they’re ruthless thugs and killers or a heavy handed (but often said to be necessary) private security group who didn’t mind getting their hands dirty.
The truth, as it often is, is somewhere in the middle. At times they were the hired goons doing the dirty work of the elites, at other times they hunted outlaws and were used to safely guard cargo (mostly gold or money) on dangerous routes.
That's what I've heard as well. More than anything, they seem like some unscrupulous mercenaries. Sort of depends on who hired them and which job their are on, as far as the good vs bad part.
Like with any organization of that age, they've done both good and bad. I'm not trying to absolve their bad actions, but if the Pinkertons were paying me a visit at my home today, I'd treat them the same as any other stranger.
Honestly though, the original tweet is pretty solid advice for anyone who arrives at your house uninvited in this day and age. Maybe ask them why they're at your door before turning too hostile though.
The concept of the Pinkertons, sure, but they've certainly crossed lines that I personally wouldn't cross. They are, in fact, a rather large organization with a long history, so I won't automatically call all of them thugs, but I also won't act like they are all standup people either.
they were used to intimidate and kill strikers as late as the 1970's. they suck. they were usually used to go beyond what the law allowed. hence the "get their hands dirty" which meant they were used to violate the law against people that hired them. what was said here on this original post is correct. if you are glamourizing them, then you wont mind when google and amazon sent them to your door to terrorize you.
Sorry, what/who are the Pinkertons?

They shot and killed strikers who had clubs and rocks, from what I’ve heard. Not the good guys if true

The good guys, if you love capitalism.

This is probably insinuating the FBI are the new Pinkertons. This cryptic shit doesn't serve a purpose, imo
Didn’t they (Pinkerton) open fire and kill a bunch of iron workers at Andrew Carnegie’s command?
