It loads pretty slowly on my end, so once you see the article, press the "X" beside the address bar. That should prevent the javascript with the pop-up to load. That works many times for me, but it is very difficult to find the right moment to press, when the site loads really fast.

I should say, this trick depends on how sites implement the block. Perhaps having an adblocker, like I do, also helps...
