Well, I am not a scientist but I have looked at some of the science which is more than some of the people running or involved with some environmental organisations seem to have done.
Current levels of CO2 in the atmosphere are just over 400ppm. It has been over 7,000ppm in the remote past - and we are still here! The effects of CO2 are not linear so if an increase to 800ppm will give a 2°C temperature increse then we will need to increase to 1,600ppm for the next 2°C increase. Conversely, a decrease to 200ppm could be catastrophic as that is around the absolute minimum level for plant life and without plants we all die.
NASA says that the current CO2 increase has caused a greening of an area equal to twice that of the continental USA. That sounds good to me.
Then we need to consider what is causing the most warming. That is not CO2 but water. H2O is also a greenhouse gas and living on an "ocean planet" means that will be difficult to escape. Some scientists have suggested that water actually provided a third of the warming increase in the 1990s.
NASA also said: Water Vapor Confirmed as Major Player in Climate Change. Basically, water provides most of the warming but the climate zealots have played it down. The total effect is much larger than that of CO2 but by considering only changes in H2O levels they can play it down.
Then we come to CO2. Most of it is quite natural. Man-made CO2 is a bit player in all this and as we need to double the current amounts for a 2°C temperature rise the chances of achieving that with industrial output is quite remote. I expect that natural variations in both CO2 and H2O are swamping any man-made CO2 changes but we rely on computer models and I seem to recall that Neil Ferguson at Imperial College London has produced not only the scary climate models but also the scary COVID-19 models. Interesting connection!
Eventually, I keep coming back to the ice core data. It shows that warming increases CO2. If you shoot someone and they fall down, it is not sensible to argue that if only more people were to fall down it would increase the number of gunshots.
