Picture that you have done something wrong and there is a bunch of people standing around you (in a circle) because you’re going to be punished, chastized, etc.
Circum, as in the circumference of a circle.
Stances, as in people standing in a fixed position.
Ah, gotcha. I thought you were referencing "dis-eases" somehow.
