I have a policy of not giving money away to beggars. Just as one example, last week I have seen a person driving a vehicle, parking it, getting out and holding a cardboard sign that says "Need money for gas". The same ones driving the same vehicle have been at my local truck stop for the last several weeks. They are gone after 5p.m., but drive their vehicle back and park it in the afternoon. They're making good money at this gig, tax free, so why get a real job?
This fellow has taken the time and money to go buy a whiteboard, a pack of colored markers, took time to create the board and put some thought and effort into it, then sits still for hours at a time begging for money when so many places (around me) are still hiring anyone willing to work for 15-25$ an hour because they can't find reliable help. I learned my lesson giving money to people like this. It only encourages them more to sit there and take YOUR hard earned money from YOU. After giving a guy a $100 bill one day who was crying in our police department with his family, who PROMISED repeatedly to shape up, sober up and find work so he wouldn't find himself in the same predicament, only to see him stroll back in begging again a few days later, Nope, Nope and Nope, never again.
Yeah I'm the same way. There's a young man in our town who looks to be in his mid-20's, mentally healthy, and completely able bodied who begs at intersections all the time. Why can't he put that energy towards a job? As a single parent I've been broke before. I took a second job, sold stuff on eBay, donated plasma, basically anything in order to provide. Plus there's a lot of help available to them in my city. They just don't want to follow the rules in order to get that help.
And don't get me started on a lot of the online "fundraisers" I see (a la gofundme). Maybe I'm heartless....
I'd love to find out what "family" is making elderly special needs people beg for change at the local shopping center. These poor people (same ones) are dropped off, wear a mask all day and stand for hours shaking or rocking back-and-forth with a cup and a sign saying "Family in need".
The people that make them do this are disgusting.
