Politicians aren't leaders. They're followers. They only get in and keep their position with all of its access to wealth and power if they follow what two parties want from them: the public and their donors. The politicians were never going to cancel that FBI building until there was a headline screaming for the FBI's head. They waited for an excuse then found one. We watch this kind of thing all the time. Republicans wait for illegals to kill some pretty white girl before complaining about illegals to fundraise. Democrats wait for some pretty white kids to get shot up at a school to demand the guns.
Politicians are followers, not leaders.
Incidentally, this is why Trump is such a breath of fresh air. He's an actual leader who doesn't give a damn about the donors because he has his own money and who knows he's not going to be liked by every voter so he has the freedom to actually stand on his own principles and lead.
I don't want my politicians to be leaders. I want them to follow their constituency.
When you act as a leader in an elected role, you move forward with your own agendas and steer based on what you believe is best, instead of what your constituency wants.
President is different, in that you are intended to lead while also doing the will of the people.

Congress has no such responsibility.
