I know a woman who married at 14 to escape an abusive home. Another, aged 16. Sometimes these young marriages aren't a horrible thing.
My sister (14) did have “fake” marriage w parents consent, she can end the fake marriage later by divorce and happily marry same man as adult again. However, she still hate my mother for it for making the decision
But is it true love? Never divorced? Any regrets?
What do u think about under 12 then as some states no minimum ages
Or if there child protective services to help them prepare for independent would they still choose to marry at young ages?
These are laws from the old days, when people died much younger.
This is often said, but it's unprovable. How long people lived is irrelevant. The only real question is Who, if anyone, was harmed.
One of my great-grandmothers married at 14, and when she died at 84, she left nine children behind (of whom my grandfather was the youngest). If she had any regrets, she never confided them to anyone.
Marriage under the age of 18 was common for many of our great grandparents, and even grandparents. During the early-mid twentieth century, a woman who was not married by their mid twenties was often considered an old hen.
Wasn't meant as proof, it was very common in the old days and their is nothing wrong with it, in and of itself.
People needed to marry young have lots of kids to work the family farms.
What’s the point of against early sex education / grooming if it could help early marriages and free child labors, no need high school or college …
I see.
My childrens grandmother (father's mom) was 14 when she married their grandfather who was 26. I suppose that was natural for back then; but now that would be considered a pedophile. I saw their marriage license myself so it is not a lie.
Old tradition Chinese culture has adopt girl age 10-12 for their son, let them know each other and family culture… and still have to wait until girl turn 16 to officially marry.
This was Kentucky culture. She wore the pants and told how things would be in their marriage and they stayed married. He died at age 71 and she died about 5 years ago. She was in her 80's I believe. None of her daughter-in-laws could get along with her as she thought she knew more than us. We could do nothing right in that womans' eyes. May she RIP.
My uncle marriage was arranged marriage and his wife was 16, don’t know much about other example but they look fine with their marriage, no divorce. Just family broken when their daughter in law totally different than them… That was culture as well, and girl can’t attend school…
Yes. I've heard of marriages being arranged here and in other countries. My husband's uncle had an arranged marriage. He lived in Staten Island NY and was a bit 'slow' in mind due to having water on his brain at birth. His father and his wife's father were friends and played a lot of card games together so one night while playing, his wife's father spoke up about how her being a 'plain' woman and having no marriage prospects would do good marrying his son. So that's how they got married. They lived to a ripe old age together but never had any children.
