If I need help (I'm not tall), I approach another customer and say, "I know you don't work here, but could you help me, please? You're taller than I am and I can't get this thing from the shelf."
It's a lot to say but it works.
Key is starting with, "I know you don't work here."
I always say something like, "I can't reach. Could I beg your help please." And finish with profuse thanks and a comment about shrinking. I had never seen any signs of offense be either black or white. But when someone who speaks for 98% of a group announces it's the zenith of bad character and ugliness for a white person to ask, even politely, for help, I get the message.
Awww. I think I have used your products. I am sorry and hope for you it turns into a blessing in disguise
