Why not download dosbox-x and grab a few dos games from the 80s and early 90s.
Castle of dr brain, adventure of monkey island, Indiana jones etc. I don't know how young your kids are but you could also grab outnumbered, super solvers, reader rabbit, space quest, kings quest, commander keen, there's allot out there. Many of the better games can be purchased (steam and gog are two good gaming platform distribution options) in a modern installable configuration that will run on current pc hardware through the dos box emulator. Or you can locate sites that offer the original software for free (not always legal).
I love the old DOS games, especially Sierra games. A couple of years ago I played all the Quest for Glory games (formerly Hero's Quest before getting sued). They just feel like a story book. You can get them cheap on Steam, but there's a site called Classic Trash where you can play them for free.
I'm picky at what I allow my kids to play. They are older too. For the unaware parent who doesn't check what they buy or can easily download for free, it's crazy.
