Well, unlike the size of viruses, masks would actually work to reduce the amount of smoke inhalation you're getting because the particles are much, much larger. It's also why during a sandstorm you cover your face so you aren't inhaling sand, or why you need to wear a particulate respirator when spraying paint (fumes aside, if applicable, which requires a different cartridge).
Don't be fooled into not protecting yourself if you get massive smoke your way just because of the pandemic bullshit.
