They didn't pretend to be unable. to take Bakhmut they had to literaly walk over the corpses of their own men. Some in Wagner thought this was a price too costly as they lost over 10000 men in that pointless battle, they literally just flooded the area with convicts and overwhelmed Ukraines defences. These convicts had no choice as they would be sledgehammered if they retreated. I have seen videos of the sledgehammer "stations" they use. Not for the faint hearted.
