My, very limited, understanding of the situation is that the only person in the world entitled to see US classified documents is the POTUS and if he chooses to show anyone else he can. Otherwise anything classified would always remain hidden from "We, the people," no matter hoiw much we needed to know.

It is the final backstop against institutional secrecy put into place by the writers of The Constitution.
