I have a slightly different take on Greenwald's analysis here.
The CIA looks for people with psychopathic tendencies. Mind you, they do not want actual psychopaths, the two are very different and the actual psychopaths are typically reserved for leadership roles.
Back to my point, the CIA actively looks to recruit those with psychopathic tendencies, especially case officers but not exclusive to case officers. They want people with flexible morals that crave the responsibility of doing jobs that other people find morally objectionable.
There's an advantage to actively reaching out to the mentally ill of society. Show me a leftist who is obsessed with race, gender and sexual orientation and i'll show you someone who is morally flexible and who desperately wants power over others.
