It is a proportional measurement, the more left they go, the further right we become.

Hate to say it, but I don't think they are really going left. What they are going is down.

By which I mean, if you consider the political field as a 4-point diamond with left and right as poles on the horizontal plane, but freedom and totalitarianism as poles on the vertical plane, with freedom at the top and totalitarian at the bottom.

They stopped being left a long time ago.

Edit: something like this, only top and bottom reversed.
