Idolatry Forbidden
15 You saw no form of any kind the day the LORD spoke to you at Horeb out of the fire. Therefore watch yourselves very carefully, 16 so that you do not become corrupt and make for yourselves an idol, an image of any shape, whether formed like a man or a woman, 17 or like any animal on earth or any bird that flies in the air, 18 or like any creature that moves along the ground or any fish in the waters below. 19 And when you look up to the sky and see the sun, the moon and the stars—all the heavenly array—do not be enticed into bowing down to them and worshiping things the LORD your God has apportioned to all the nations under heaven. 20 But as for you, the LORD took you and brought you out of the iron-smelting furnace, out of Egypt, to be the people of his inheritance, as you now are. 21 The LORD was angry with me because of you, and he solemnly swore that I would not cross the Jordan and enter the good land the LORD your God is giving you as your inheritance. 22 I will die in this land; I will not cross the Jordan; but you are about to cross over and take possession of that good land. 23 Be careful not to forget the covenant of the LORD your God that he made with you; do not make for yourselves an idol in the form of anything the LORD your God has forbidden. 24 For the LORD your God is a consuming fire, a jealous God. 25 After you have had children and grandchildren and have lived in the land a long time—if you then become corrupt and make any kind of idol, doing evil in the eyes of the LORD your God and arousing his anger, 26 I call the heavens and the earth as witnesses against you this day that you will quickly perish from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to possess. You will not live there long but will certainly be destroyed. 27 The LORD will scatter you among the peoples, and only a few of you will survive among the nations to which the LORD will drive you. 28 There you will worship man-made gods of wood and stone, which cannot see or hear or eat or smell. 29 But if from there you seek the LORD your God, you will find him if you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30 When you are in distress and all these things have happened to you, then in later days you will return to the LORD your God and obey him. 31 For the LORD your God is a merciful God; he will not abandon or destroy you or forget the covenant with your ancestors, which he confirmed to them by oath.
Study Notes:
4:19 God was not excusing the other nations for their idol worship. He was simply saying that while judgment might be delayed for those other nations, it would be swift and complete for Israel because Israel knew God's laws. We must remember that idol worship was not just keeping statues around the house--harmless lumps of clay, wood, or iron. It was the commitment to the other evil qualities, beliefs, and practices the idol represented (such as murder, prostitution, cruelty in war, self-centeredness) or to strengths and attributes of mankind, the animal kingdom, or the orderliness of stars that were revered without reference to God who created them. Because God had so clearly revealed himself in Israel's history, the Israelites had no excuse for worshipin anyone but the true God.
4:24 God is a consuming fire. Because he is morally perfect, he hates sin and cannot accept those who practice it. Moses' sin kept him from entering the promised land, and no sacrifice could remove that judgment. Sin kept us from entering God's presence, but Jesus Christ paid the penalty for our sin and removed God's judgment forever by his death. Trusting in Jesus Christ will save you from God's anger and will allow you to begin a personal relationship with him.
4:24 Jealousy is a demand for someone else's exclusive affection or loyalty. Some jealousy is bad. It is destructive for a man to get upset when his wife talks pleasantly with another man. But other jealousy is good. It is right for a man to demand that his wife treat him, and only him, as her husband. Usually we use the word jealousy only for the bad reaction. But God's kind of jealousy is appropriate and good. He is defending his word and his high honor. He makes a strong, exclusive demand on us: We must treat only the Lord--and no one else in all the universe--as God.
4:29 Do you want to know God? God promised the Israelites that they would find him when they searched with all their hearts and souls. God is knowable and wants to be known--but we have to want to know him. Acts of service and worship must be accompanied by sincere devotion of the heart. As Hebrews 11:6 says, "Anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him." God will reward those who pursue a relationship with him.
Praise God that He draws us back to Him! This world needs the strong magnetism of God. As scientists are so enamored with their new discoveries and what can be done with them, I sit here in awe of the magnitude of God in the nano and beyond all. And to think God cares so much for us that He gave His Son, and sent His Holy Spirit to be with us--to draw us back to Him in true freedom, by our own wise choices. Oh may we treat the discoveries we make with the proper reverence due their Maker.
Almighty Creator of All, thank You for Your everlasting, all-consuming power. Thank You that You prevail. Guide us through this week enfolded in Your strength and protection. Lord, we lift up Your children to You. We also lift up all those working to do Your will here on earth. Bless them all with all Your goodness. In Jesus' holy name, Amen.

Have a blessed day.
Amen! Welcome back and thank you. I’m sure I’m not the only one who needed to hear this today…
This was wonderful, and coincidentally, very relevant to something weighing on my heart. Thank you!
This is hilarious to post on this sub where 95% of users worship their thought-form idols of Trump, White Hats, or Jesus.
You don't get it. "Jesus" was presented to you as an idea. You adopted this thought.
The idolization of ANY thought, is just that: idol worship. A "false idol"? A "true idol" is still an idol. lol
Like most Christians, you take your conciousness for granted. You don't realize that it doesn't matter whether your idol is formed out of clay or thought: it is an idol nonethless. You believe you can "pick and choose" which idols are worthy? It's rediculous.
I'm not a "Christian", but even your master has told you how it works in plain language. The young child is uncontrived. Seeking nothing, adopting nothing, rejecting nothing. It's exactly this quality that makes them fit for the Kingdom. You think the child ascribes any importance to a so-called "Jesus". It's just another thought among infinite.
A disingenuous response.
