Why? Because the source code of DDWRT is mostly a Jail Software (Proprietary) and partly Libre Software (Open Source). In comparison, OpenWrt is mostly Libre Software. This means OpenWrt has much stronger security and stronger privacy. Source:

DDWRT is what I use on my router. I've had zero issues at all and it has built in VPN capability along with all the security bonuses.
