After slavery was made illegal in the United States of America, major Indian tribes still owned slaves on tribal land. These were not peaceful people just minding their own business. They fought wars just like anyone else.

The Five Civilized Tribes were a sovereign entity. They didn't end slavery until after 1865. Ulysses S. Grant also owned 129 slaves before, during and after the war. Robert E. Lee had freed his slave before the war ever started. The first slave owner in America was a black man named Anthony Johnson. He not only owned black slave he also own Irish slaves.
