It was a condemnation of Islam and its oppression of women.
There was a brilliant line at the end between the mother and the lead child, which was to the effect "you still have a choice"
She was never truly comfortable with what she was doing, upping the ante by forcing her friends to perform dances even they questioned
She had nothing to lose, this (the dancing) was her ticket to freedom, from not being the same as her mother, subject to the abuse of men in the name of religion, and a systematic shaming and demonization of the female body, nay, existence.
None of the stupid dance scenes were filmed in a way 99% of people would get off, the girls portrayed their own insecurity and disgust with themselves while doing it. The crowd in the last dance scene was also visibly disgusted.
In another part of the movie, the lead child assaulted one of the other girls just to get her out of the group and put herself in her place...
To her, it was all or nothing..dancing was just a means to an end
The director may not have intended it but it was a brilliant condemnation of sharia and Islam.
But the conservatives who actually watched were just ermagherd tweens dancing to even analyze the film on a deeper level.

That is an interesting take. I have not seen it, nor do I intend to. So I'm unable to know if there's any truth to what you say or not.
