My dad was the chaplain at a max security prison in Illinois and I got to go with him to a "Lifer Picnic" one Saturday. Families came in and lifers were grilling hot dogs, lifers were performing on stage, etc. I was a journalism nerd and had hopes to interview these lifers and write a story. (I was about 15). I sat in a big circle with a bunch of lifers eating, and I went around the circle asking what they were in for. Oddly enough I was eating with all the innocents who had been "railroaded". But I can guarantee one thing, that group of lifers I hung out with that day would have torn this man limb from limb.
